The California Secretary of State reports that, as of November 2010, 17,285,883 California citizens are registered to vote. There are 23,552,699 eligible voters in California, so this means that 73.9% are registered.

For statewide general elections:
Lowest voting turnout: 24.8% in 1980 (state election)
Highest voting turnout: 78.32% in 1940 (presidential election)

The average rate hovers around 50%.

Voter turnout for California midterm elections has steadily decreased since the 1950s.



In the most recent statewide election on November 2, 2010, there was a 59.6% turnout.

Los Angeles County

In Los Angeles County, there are 5,823,294 citizens eligible to vote. Out of those eligible, 4,474,107 of them are registered. Therefore, 76.8% of eligible voters are registered.
